Narrow washing machines: we save space, but what about the quality of washing?

Modern apartment standards have increased significantly, but a lack of free space remains a fairly common phenomenon. Because of this, when choosing a washing machine, many are faced with a dilemma: buy a narrow unit so as not to experience household inconveniences, or choose a washing machine with large dimensions, using the maximum square footage in the bathroom, hallway or kitchen. The first option looks more attractive, but how good are these machines? Let’s discuss it in the article.

Does the quality of washing depend on the depth of the machine?

No, it doesn’t. But depending on the diameter and volume of the drum – yes. If diameter has little correlation with depth, then volume depends on both parameters. In any case, even narrow models allow you to wash at least one set of bed linen: this is a kind of measure of the capabilities of such equipment.

Now there are washing machines on sale with the following cabinet depth:

  • 38–45 cm – among large manufacturers, only a few brands produce such machines (Beko, Electrolux);
  • 45–50 cm is the most common option; all manufacturers have such models;
  • from 55 cm – two sets of bed linen can be placed in the drum of such a machine.

For most aspects of use, the deeper the drum, the better. Even if we take such a parameter as energy consumption, narrow washing machines are noticeably inferior. Built-in dryers that are gaining popularity will not fit into small appliances by definition.

So if it is possible to install a large washing machine, it is better to choose it.

Super narrow models

If there is not enough space even for a narrow washing machine, it is worth looking for models with even smaller dimensions. They are still produced, mostly by Asian companies. We are talking about a size of 34–36 cm. This is the limit below which the drum will be so narrow that it will no longer be possible to balance it.

There is no need to talk about washing a full set of bedding, not to mention a blanket or winter outerwear. That is, something will have to be washed by hand or taken to the laundry.

How does depth depend on a single wash volume?

The characteristics of any model must indicate the maximum weight of laundry loaded into the drum. Here are approximate calculations of the dependence of the amount of laundry that fits in the drum on the depth of the washing machine:

  • for narrow units this is 4 kg of linen made from natural materials (for example, cotton) and 1.7 kg of synthetic items;
  • for washing machines with average depth dimensions this is 5 kg and 2.2 kg, respectively;
  • with a depth of 55 cm, you can wash 6 kg of cotton items and 2.5 kg of synthetics in one cycle.

If the washing quality of narrow units is more or less good, then in terms of functionality they are noticeably inferior to their older brothers.
